University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) – ADEMA Overview
ADEMA University School is a private higher education institution located in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, affiliated with the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) — a respected public university with origins dating back to 1483 and formally established in its current form in 1978. With over 30 years of experience in academic and research activity in the Balearic Islands, ADEMA has built a strong reputation as a regional and national leader in health sciences education, combining rigorous academic standards with an innovative, practice-first approach.
The Dentistry degree is officially awarded by UIB, ensuring full compliance with Spanish national higher education law (Royal Decree 822/2021) and the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) under the Bologna Process. The programme totals 300 ECTS credits, structured across five academic years, and is fully taught in English — making it one of the very few English-language dentistry programmes available in Spain and a genuinely distinctive option for international students seeking an EU-recognised qualification in a truly exceptional setting.
ADEMA operates across multiple campuses in Mallorca, including the main Son Rossinyol campus and the newer Campus Coll — home to the University Research Centre for Medical Sciences of Mallorca, placing ADEMA at the forefront of healthcare education and innovation in the Balearic region. Through its affiliation with UIB, students also gain access to the university’s wider academic infrastructure, including sports facilities, libraries, and computer labs.
Patient Contact from Year One: ADEMA’s Clinical Dental Training (CDT) programme integrates real patient contact from the very first year of study, through a Service-Learning model that places students in active clinical environments while still developing foundational knowledge. This is far earlier than most comparable programmes across Europe.
Integrated University Dental Clinic On-Site: ADEMA has its own fully operational University Dental Clinic, where students work alongside qualified dental professionals to treat real patients under supervision. This clinic is integral to the programme, not supplementary, ensuring consistent and meaningful clinical exposure throughout the degree.
Cutting-Edge Technology: The school houses state-of-the-art facilities including 12 3D haptic virtual simulators for pre-clinical practice, a dedicated biochemistry laboratory for oral health analysis, and high-capacity computer labs equipped with the latest dental software. ADEMA has also incorporated AI-driven tools for early oral cancer detection directly into its curriculum — one of very few dental schools in Europe to do so at undergraduate level.
Small Class Sizes and Personalised Support: ADEMA deliberately maintains small cohorts, ensuring that each student benefits from close-knit relationships with faculty, personalised academic guidance, and a learning environment where no student is left behind. Teaching staff are actively practising professionals who bring direct clinical experience into every session.
EU-Recognised Degree with International Mobility: The degree is officially awarded by UIB, accredited by ANECA (Spain’s national quality assurance agency), and structured under the Bologna Process, making it fully valid for professional registration and practice across all EU and EEA member states. UIB itself participates in Erasmus and Socrates exchange programmes, providing students with international mobility opportunities during their studies.
Scholarship and Research Opportunities: ADEMA operates its own scholarship programme, including the Opportunity Scholarship for students with financial need, Social Commitment scholarships linked to international cooperation projects (including field programmes in Kenya), and Research Collaboration grants for final-year students who wish to begin contributing to live research projects at the school.
The Bachelor in Dentistry at UIB – ADEMA is a five-year, full-time degree taught entirely in English, structured across 300 ECTS credits and organised into seven clearly defined academic modules. Each academic year comprises 60 ECTS credits, divided equally across two semesters.
The seven modules are: Basic Biomedical Sciences Relevant to Dentistry; Introduction to Dentistry; General Medical-Surgical Pathology and Therapeutics; Pathology and Therapeutic Dentistry; Tutored Internships; Complementary Training in Dentistry; and a Final Degree Project. This modular architecture ensures a logical academic progression — from the scientific foundations of health through to advanced clinical specialisation and independent research.
In the first two years, students cover core biomedical subjects including Human Anatomy, Human Biochemistry, Human Histology, Human Microbiology and Immunology, Human Physiology, and Introduction to Health Research and Statistics. Alongside these, students begin exposure to dentistry-specific content including Biomorphology and Microbiology of the Stomatognathic Apparatus, Psychology and Communication in Health, Epidemiology and Public Health, and Radiology and Legal Dentistry.
From year three onwards, the programme transitions into intensive clinical and speciality-specific training. Students work in the integrated Dental Clinic treating adult and paediatric patients, and cover subjects including Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Oral Medicine, Endodontics, and Dental Aesthetics. The final year focuses entirely on advanced integrated clinical practice — both adult and paediatric — alongside modules in Dentistry for Special Patients, External Academic Internships, Research and Documentation in Dentistry, and culminating in the Final Degree Project (dissertation).
To progress to fifth-year clinical rotations and the Final Degree Project, all prior-year subjects must be successfully completed, ensuring every graduate is fully prepared for independent professional practice upon qualification.
Mallorca is one of the most desirable places to live in Europe — and studying dentistry here means building your career in an environment that is as enriching personally as it is professionally. Palma de Mallorca, the island’s capital and the location of the ADEMA campus, combines a vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere with a relaxed Mediterranean pace of life, excellent public transport, and a thriving international student community.
For students, monthly living costs in Palma typically range between €800 and €1,200, inclusive of accommodation, food, transport, and leisure. Student rooms in shared apartments start from around €400 per month, with studio apartments available from €700, depending on location and proximity to the city centre. The UIB metro line (Line M1) connects the main campus to the heart of Palma in approximately 13 minutes, running every 15 minutes throughout the day, making commuting straightforward and affordable.
Palma itself offers a rich cultural and social environment — from the UNESCO-listed Cathedral and the Royal Palace of Almudaina to an acclaimed food scene, vibrant nightlife, world-class beaches, hiking trails in the Sierra de Tramuntana, and year-round festivals and events. Mallorca enjoys over 300 days of sunshine per year and excellent flight connections to cities across the UK and Europe, making it easy for international students to travel home or explore the continent during breaks.
Spain is increasingly recognised as a leading destination in Europe for English-language dental education. UIB – ADEMA in particular stands out for delivering genuine clinical quality, in a fully English-medium environment, at a tuition fee that is significantly more competitive than comparable programmes in the UK, Ireland, or other Western European countries — all while offering students the extraordinary advantage of island life in the Mediterranean.
