Study Medicine in Hungary

Hungary is a landlocked country located in the heart of Europe in the Carpathian Basin. Its territory is divided into three distinct regions, shaped by the courses of two major rivers: the Danube and the Tisza. The region west of the Danube is called Transdanubia; between the Danube and Tisza is the plain, and to the east of the Tisza is the Trans-Tisza region. While Hungary does have elevated areas, its “mountains” are rather hills.

The climate in the country is temperate continental, with warm summers and very cold winters, and precipitation levels being relatively low. On account of the mountain ranges that border the country, such as the Alps and the Carpathians, it is not greatly affected by extreme weather, and therefore the climate is relatively stable throughout the year.

There is also a very distinguished and long history in the medical field that dates back to medieval eras in Hungary. Some of the earliest sources of health care come from the era of monastic orders relying on herbs and spiritual healing. In Hungary, people gained interest in formal study as the universities began to be established. One such institution would be the University of Pécs, based in the 14th century. Hungarian medicine had its contribution grow over time, especially with the founding of Semmelweis University in the 18th century. Folk medicine and herbal remedies were widely practised there. Later it was merged with formal medical practices which Hungarian scholars and physicians introduced.

One of the most important figures in the history of medicine was Ignaz Semmelweis, a Hungarian physician who, in the 19th century, revolutionized hospital hygiene. He proved that the antiseptic procedures considerably reduced the maternal mortality rate and this brought him recognition worldwide. From then until now, Hungary has continued to lead in medical inventions, particularly in the fields of cardiology and cancer research.

Hungarian universities offer internationally accredited programs and study experiences, attracting thousands of foreign students each year. Hungary comes top among all European countries in ranking as an outstanding destination for furthering one’s education in medicine, considering their academic excellence, advanced facilities, and relatively low fees compared to that of the rest of Europe.
